Regional Vice President
Sue Brown
Sue Brown has been an activist for the past twenty-eight years (that’s right, she’s been doing this since she was one!). Sue is currently the Regional Vice-President of Region 6. She has been an Executive Board Member since 2001. Aside from being busy at the board, Sue also holds the office of 1st Vice President of Local 636. In a past life, Sue was also the President at L. 636.
In her day-job, Sue is Vocational Instructor at the North East Mental Health Centre (NEMHC), based in North Bay. Sue previously worked as a Developmental Service Worker at the Muskoka Centre in Gravenhurst prior to experiencing a surplus and having to move to NEMHC. Sue had been a Steward and Chief Steward in that local.
During her days as President of L.636, Sue had the experience of leading the local of 600 members through a three week strike in 1996. The strike was a first for L.636 and a solidarity builder for the members! Sue and others even partook in a “sit-in” at the office of a little-known-man by the name of Mike Harris! Sue certainly has a knack for making events memorable, and nobody will be quick to forget Sue’s actions during that time.
Sue’s goal as a leader in Region 6 remains to replenish and build activism by sharing her own knowledge and experience with young activists from the rank and file. Sue knows that “knowledge is power” and sharing that knowledge is key!
Board Member
Jennifer Giroux
Jen Giroux has been an OPSEU member for over six years. She has been a worker at the Children’s Aid Society in Sudbury since 2003, and has been active within Local 668 for nearly as long.
Prior to being elected to the Board, Jen proudly was a member of OPSEU’s Provincial Young Worker’s Committee (and still meets the criteria!). As a result, Jen has a keen interest in strengthening the union movement well into the future and recognizes the need to come together with other working peoples in order to achieve this. Jen believes that unions help to create a better society – not just for the communities of today, but for the communities of tomorrow!
Jennifer was born in Sudbury and attributes her activism to her parents.
