Sudbury Area Council
I am writing to all of you with an update on our last meeting. We attempted to meet this past Wed. evening however out of our 28 locals only 5 local presidents and or representatives showed up and we didn’t have quorum. We are extremely eager to get every local in our area involved and we have some great ideas that we would like to start working on however without quorum no business can take place. We are in need of a treasurer and have a couple people who are interested but we can’t hold an election without quorum. See where this is going LOL. I am going to send the meeting date out earlier in hopes you can all book it off as to come on out and help us get things going in Sudbury. Our next meeting will be on Wed. February 9th at 5:30pm we are going to try to have it right after work and we will try to keep them all brief.
Some of the things we would like to see start happening in the service area are consistent meetings that are scheduled for the entire year. The membership centre is almost complete and we would like to make it “ours” now by providing each local with a bulletin board that they can use or decorate or information on. We are also discussing getting individual filing cabinets for each local. This summer we would like to plan a couple social events like a scavenger hunt and start early on Labour Day plans to have a great showing and a big Family picnic.
Our next meeting is the last one before the deadline for resolutions and constitutional amendments, so please start thinking about that as he have a great opportunity to put forth these as an area council and in fact last year we submitted the second largest amount across the province.
On January 29th the USW is sending a bus to Hamilton for a Provincial day of action fighting for pensions. Information can be found on the OPSEU website.
On Feb. 17th the NUPGE campaign Champions for Change is organizing a “Demo” in front of the Sudbury Regional Hospital from 11:00-1:00, we are pulling together with community organizations to shed light on the Tax Fairness issue. We feel that instead of the Government handing billions over to the rich corporations they should be putting it into Public services. Here in Sudbury the community has been begging for a PET SCANNER, the demo on the 17th we’ll be asking for support from our members and community members to come down and help us get the message out.” If you can take care of your friends on Bay Street you can take care of us…We want a pet scan”. We will be bringing signs down and encourage you to make your own sign. Send an email to your membership to your friends and neighbours’. Donations will be accepted on behalf of the Sam Bruno Foundation and will go towards Sam’s mission of getting Sudbury a Pet Scanner, funds may also be made at the Sudbury Regional Hospital Foundation, but you must specify that money is to go to the PET campaign. The Demo will be held at the intersection of Paris Street and Ramey View right by Lilli Creek. For more information please call or email myself.
Also don’t forget to check out the region 6 website we will be posting Sudbury Area council news under our own Tab there.
Coming up in February the Nickel Belt NDP Riding Assoc. will be having a Lobster Dinner at the Caruso club to raise money for Claude Gravelle’s upcoming Federal campaign. The date is Thursday Feb. 10th at 6:30 if anyone is interested in buying tickets please call me at 665-5518. Locals or individuals can purchase tickets and tax receipts will be issued.
So those are some of the upcoming things, I urge all of you to think about coming out to the next meeting or at the very least send someone else from your local….remember you can use 80/20 time to get out of work if that is the barrier. I look forward to seeing all of you. Also if you have recently had an election and are no longer the local president please forward this email to them or send me their email so I can add them to my distribution list.
On behalf of the Sudbury Area Council LEC,
Thanks and see you soon,
Felicia Fahey
