A motion was passed April 14, 2009 at the monthly Sudbury Area Council meeting to become a community sponsor at the cost of  $500 and  sponsor a team of ten walkers at the cost of $100.

Shirley Hickman, Executive Director, Threads of Life who attended the Winnipeg, Manitoba NAOSH (North American Occupational Safety & Health) launch, “I can’t tell you how many people suddenly realized how big an impact this walk has toward raising awareness when you see the sea of yellow shirts walking in the name of injury prevention. To grow from four communities in one year to 14 is a testament to hundreds of volunteers driving this event, to corporate sponsors committed to supporting their communities and thousands of participants who believe in our cause.” The funds raised will go to the Threads of Life Family Support programs and services to help families of workplace fatalities, life-altering injury and occupational disease.

"Steps for Life is an opportunity for everyone to come together for one day and raise awareness of the importance of workplace health and safety within our community. This is the only way that we are going to promote a culture of safety where injuries and illnesses in the workplace are considered to be simply unacceptable,” says Hickman.

Steps for Life is an annual 5 km walk that is held the first Sunday of the Month of May which traditionally kicks off NAOSH week.
